Before any dental procedure, we’ll explain your sedation options and make recommendations based on your anxiety level and the type of treatment you need.
We offer oral sedation and IV sedation in our office; here are some of the differences between them:
- Administration — Oral sedation requires you to take a pill before your appointment, while IV sedation is delivered into your bloodstream once you arrive.
- Effects — Oral sedation takes about an hour to take effect, but IV sedation begins working almost immediately.
- Level of consciousness — Oral sedation makes you feel drowsy, but you can still respond to questions. IV sedation causes a deeper relaxation, known as a “twilight” state.
- Monitoring — Oral sedation requires less monitoring than IV sedation. With IV sedation, a trained nurse will continuously monitor your vital signs during your procedure.
