If you’re a parent, you understand how frenzied school mornings can be; between backpacks, lunches, and missing shoes, it can feel impossible to prioritize your child’s oral health. At Hite Family Dentistry, we want you to know that we realize how busy you are; that’s why we work with busy families to establish a simple, at-home, school-day smile routine.

With an oral health routine in place, you can help your child maintain healthy teeth and gums and feel confident when they smile.

School Day Smile Routine Made Simple

In addition to making regular dental visits for a thorough exam and cleaning every six months, there are numerous things you can do to set your child up for oral health success during the school year.

This quick guide for parents makes it possible to create a fuss-free routine that fits even the busiest schedule:

Morning Routine — Each morning, have your child start their day fresh by doing the following:

  • Brush with fluoride toothpaste for two minutes. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Floss your teeth to remove any food debris left from breakfast.
  • Drink a full glass of water to rinse their mouth and hydrate their bodies.
  • Pack a healthy lunch that includes crunchy fruits and vegetables, cheese, yogurt, and a refillable water bottle. Try to avoid sugary treats or drinks that contain sugar.

Evening Routine— At night, before they go to bed, have your child follow these steps:

  • Brush with fluoride toothpaste to remove the plaque and sugars from their teeth.
  • Floss between each tooth; flossing is as important as brushing.
  • Avoid eating or drinking anything with sugar after you brush and floss.
